Frequently Asked Questions
How does the photofacial process work?
Our Icon™ I.P.L. Photofacial utilizes optimized pulsed light technology which, unlike lasers, uses many wavelengths of light with special filters that deliver the best wavelengths to treat specific esthetic conditions.
As the handpiece glides over the area being treated, specialized pulses of light are delivered into your skin and target brown spots, sun damage and vessels without causing harm to the surrounding skin.
Once these targets absorb the energy pulses, they are destroyed and will slowly disappear through your body’s natural healing process and its lymphatic system.
After a photofacial treatment, the lymphatic system becomes more active in the treated area, aiding in the removal of broken-down pigment particles and damaged tissue. This leads to a gradual fading of brown spots and a reduction in the appearance of redness and vessels as the body’s natural detoxification process takes place.
What is the science behind my Photofacial treatment?
The lymphatic system is part of your body’s natural healing process. As the Photofacial IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) energy penetrates the skin, it breaks down melanin in brown spots and coagulates blood vessels, prompting the body’s immune response to clear away the treated areas. The lymphatic system, which consists of vessels, nodes, and organs, helps facilitate this process by carrying away waste materials and cellular debris generated during the treatment.
Once the waste materials are taken away by the lymphatic system, they end up in the liver. The liver is an important organ that processes many compounds in your body. It takes the broken-down debris and gets rid of it through your normal bodily processes, primarily through the urinary system.
What types of results can I expect from an I.P.L treatment?
Anticipate a smoother, even complexion and a reduction in the visibility of brown spots, redness, and vessels, leading to a more balanced skin tone. As time progresses, you’ll observe your brown spots fading (initially darkening and eventually shedding) within a few weeks. Immediate enhancements in vessel (broken capillaries) appearance are also likely, followed by further clearing in the weeks ahead.
You will notice a decline in brown spots, redness, and broken capillaries, for a more harmonious skin tone. Enhancements will persist during your skin’s natural renewal cycles, extending up to 6 weeks post-treatment. Initially, treated hyperpigmentation might appear slightly elevated or darker, encompassed by a reddish border—this progression is normal. The pigment will progressively deepen in colour, forming a crust before naturally exfoliating from your skin within 7-21 days after the procedure.
Vessels (broken capillaries) could experience an immediate shift to gray or a paler hue, occasionally showing hints of purple or red. Depending on the number of photofacial sessions you have undergone, they will gradually fade, (either partially or entirely), within approximately 10-14 days.
We recommend starting with 3 photofacials (about one every 6 weeks) to see the smoothest results. As time passes, you may opt to come in for maintenance sessions in the year if new age spots or sun damage eventually forms.
How long does an I.P.L treatment take?
The photofacial procedure itself is relatively quick and convenient. It can be performed in as little as 30 to 60 minutes, depending on the size of the treatment area.
During the session, intense pulsed light (IPL) technology is utilized to target concerns like brown spots, redness, and broken capillaries, stimulating the skin’s natural healing processes. Multiple I.P.L treatment sessions (about recommended to achieve optimal outcomes, with periodic maintenance sessions recommended to prolong and enhance the results over time.
How many I.P.L treatments will I need?
As your triggered skin cells regenerate over a few weeks after each I.P.L treatment, results get better. One to three I.P.L treatments may be needed, depending on the severity of your conditions. You will progressively see brighter, more even skin as each I.P.L treatment builds on the last toward beautiful, clear skin.
What to expect on the day of I.P.L treatment
Before the optimized pulsed light handpiece is used, a gel is applied to your skin where you will receive treatment. You will also be provided eye shields to protect yourself from the light during an I.P.L treatment.
The treatment will begin with the provider guiding the Icon™ photofacial handpiece over the treatment area. You will feel cooling while the handpiece is gliding over the treatment area to provide a comfortable session. You may also feel a slight rubber-band like snapping when the energy is being delivered into your skin which disappears almost immediately however, a warm sensation after the treatment is common.
Depending on the size of the area, I.P.L treatments can take just minutes. After the treatment, the gel will be removed and a cooling gel may be applied to your skin. Bandages and ointments are not necessary due to the nature of the treatments being so minimally invasive. For a few days after your treatment, you may feel like you have a mild sunburn but can resume your normal day to day activities immediately following treatment.
What can I expect after an I.P.L treatment?
Typically, most people experience a mild, sunburn-like sensation, possibly accompanied by some minor swelling, immediately following the treatment. This can last for up to 14 days in the most extreme cases that usually involve a mix of sensitive skin and other life habits that delay the usual healing time.
In these more extreme cases, you may also experience some mild bruising in addition to redness or swelling. Although results improve over time as skin regeneration is triggered, you will soon see any redness lift. Pigmented spots will momentarily look even darker right after the treatment, but will begin to lift as new skin cells are produced.
Ask your experienced Total Wrapture laser technician to discuss other possible side effects and the necessary post-treatment care with you based on your unique skin, medications, and life habits.
How quickly will I recover from an I.P.L treatment?
This varies from person to person. Immediately after the I.P.L treatment, it is common to feel a mild sunburn-like sensation around the treatment site, which typically lasts 2-24 hours. Redness and/or swelling may accompany this and usually resolves in 2-3 days (up to 2 weeks for more extreme cases).
You will receive a thorough skin consultation before proceeding with any treatment to determine how long your skin will show redness or swelling based on your unique skin, life habits, and any medication you may be taking.
What will my skin look like after my I.P.L Photofacial treatment?
The treated condition (such as a brown spot) may initially look raised/darker with a reddened perimeter. This is normal. The condition’s pigment will gradually turn darker over the next few days and begin crusting. It will eventually flake off of your skin in 7-21 days after the treatment.
The vessels (broken capillaries – those small, spider-like veins around the nose or on the cheeks) may undergo immediate graying or blanching or exhibit a slight purple or red colour change. They will fully or partially fade (depending on how many photofacials you have had) in about 10-14 days.
