What is a Gel Overlay?

Our Gel Overlay service involves the application of gel on your natural nails without any extensions.

What happens during a maintenance gel fill?

  • Assessment: The technician begins by assessing the growth and any wear or damage to the existing gel nails.
  • Nail Prep: The nails are cleansed to remove any oils. The growth area near the cuticle is lightly buffed or filed to ensure proper adhesion of the new product. The technician also files down the entire nail to even out the surface and reduce thickness.
  • Cuticle Care: The cuticles are gently pushed back and any excess skin is removed.
  • Gel Application: A layer of gel is applied to the base (or growth area) of the nail. If there’s any chipping or damage on the nail’s body, a thin layer may also be applied over the entire nail.
  • Curing: The gel is then cured under a UV or LED light to harden.
  • Finishing: The nails are shaped and buffed to achieve the desired look. A gel top coat is then applied and cured for added shine and protection.
  • Moisturizing: Cuticle oil is applied to rehydrate the cuticles.

What is the difference between gel nails and dip powder nails?

Gel nails and powder dip nails are both popular choices for nail enhancements, but they have distinct characteristics and application processes.

Gel nails involve layering a gel substance and curing under UV/LED light, while dip powder nails involve dipping the nails into colored powder and sealing with a special liquid.

Both types have their own set of fans and are chosen based on personal preference.

Here’s a detailed breakdown:

Gel Nails:

  1. Composition: Gel nails are made from a gel substance that comes in a pot or a bottle. This gel can be clear or pink.

  2. Application:

    • The gel is applied directly to the natural nail.
    • Each layer of gel needs to be cured under a UV or LED light to harden.
    • Once the desired thickness is achieved and everything is cured, the nail technician shapes and buffs the nails and applies a top coat.
  3. Finish: They give a glossy, shiny finish.

  4. Durability: Gel nails are known for their durability and can last up to 3-4 weeks without chipping.

Powder Dip Nails:

  1. Composition: Dip powder nails utilize coloured powder and a bonding liquid. The powder is a blend of the pigment and a co-polymer which provides the strength and structure to the nail.

  2. Application:

    • The nail is prepped and a primer/bond is applied.
    • The nail is then dipped into the powder, or the powder is sprinkled onto the nail.
    • After dipping, the excess powder is brushed off, and a sealing liquid is applied.
    • This process might be repeated several times to achieve the desired thickness and colour opacity.
    • Once complete, the nail technician shapes, buffs, and applies a top coat.
  3. Finish: They can have a matte or glossy finish based on the top coat used.

  4. Durability: Dip powder nails are also durable and can last anywhere from 3-5 weeks.

What are the benefits of getting regular pedicures and how often should I get them?

Foot Health: Regular pedicures can help prevent nail diseases and disorders. Keeping the nails clean and trimmed prevents them from growing inward and causing infection.

Early Detection: Regular visits can help in early detection of conditions like corns, bunions, and fungal infections. This ensures timely treatment.

Moisturization: The moisturizing elements of a pedicure can prevent cracks, blisters, and other foot problems that can be painful and potentially serious if they become infected.

Exfoliation: Removing dead skin cells encourages new cell growth, making the skin on your feet smoother and more attractive. It also prevents the cells from accumulating and causing bunions or corns.

Circulation Boost: The massage that’s often part of a pedicure can help promote circulation and reduce swelling in the ankles and feet.

Relaxation: Pedicures can be very relaxing, especially if combined with other spa treatments. The massage elements can help relieve tension in the feet, and the feeling of being pampered can reduce stress.

Cosmetic Benefits: Regular pedicures keep toenails looking their best. They can be painted with a beautiful color or given a buffed, shiny finish.

Prevention: Pedicures can also prevent calluses. If left untreated, calluses can become painful.

Promotes Mental Well-being: Taking time for yourself and prioritizing self-care can boost mood and promote a feeling of well-being.

How Often Should You Get Pedicures?

The frequency of pedicures depends on the rate of nail growth, and the wear and tear your feet undergo. Generally, a pedicure every 4-6 weeks is recommended for most people to maintain soft, clean, and healthy feet.

However, those who wear open-toed shoes frequently, stand a lot, or exercise rigorously might benefit from more frequent pedicures.

How can I prolong the life of my manicure?

Be Gentle:

  • Avoid using your nails as tools: Do not use them to open cans, peel stickers, or do other activities that can cause stress on the nail.
  • Limit exposure to chemicals: Household cleaners can weaken polish, gel or dip powder coating. Wear gloves when cleaning or washing dishes.

Moisturize:

  • Use cuticle oil: Applying cuticle oil daily helps keep your nails and cuticles hydrated. This can prevent lifting, especially at the cuticle area.
  • Moisturize your hands: Regularly apply hand cream to keep the skin around your nails soft and hydrated.

Why are more men getting manicures and pedicures than ever before?

In recent years, there’s been a growing trend of men visiting spas and salons for various grooming services, including manicures and pedicures.

Manicures and pedicures are not gender-specific and can provide a range of benefits for men just as they do for all genders. Here’s why they make a great gift for men:

Hygiene and Cleanliness: A manicure and pedicure can help keep nails clean and cuticles in check, reducing the chance of fungal infections or ingrown nails. Proper nail care can prevent various nail disorders.

Relaxation: These treatments can be incredibly relaxing. The massage elements, in particular, can help relieve stress and tension in the hands and feet.

Improved Appearance: Neat, well-maintained nails present a polished and professional image. Whether in a business setting or casual environment, many men appreciate the refined appearance manicures and pedicures provide.

Health Benefits: Regular pedicures can prevent calluses and treat dry or rough skin, especially in the heel area. This can be especially beneficial for men who are on their feet often or engage in sports.

Therapeutic Elements: The massaging elements of a manicure or pedicure can stimulate circulation and can potentially alleviate symptoms like pain or discomfort in hands and feet.

Boosts Self-Confidence: Feeling well-groomed can boost anyone’s confidence, regardless of gender.

Variety of Options: For men who may not be interested in nail polish, our sportsmanicures and pedicures that focus solely on nail shaping, cuticle care, exfoliation, and massage.

Prevention: Regular foot care can help in the early detection of conditions like corns, bunions, or fungal infections, ensuring timely treatment.

Opportunity for Bonding: It can be an activity to do together, whether it’s with a partner, family member, or friend.

A Unique Gift: For many men, a manicure or pedicure might be a new experience. Gifting them this service offers them the opportunity to try something new and potentially discover its benefits.

How can manicures and pedicures help maintain youthful skin on my hands and feet?

These treatments involve moisturizing the skin and massaging the hands and feet, which boosts blood circulation. This helps prevent dryness, reduces the appearance of wrinkles, and keeps the skin soft and supple. Additionally, exfoliation in pedicures removes dead skin cells, promoting the growth of new, youthful skin.

How does the Classic Manicure differ from the Sports Manicure?

The Classic Manicure includes everything in the Sports Manicure with the addition of nail polish application.

I have a broken toenail. Can it be repaired?

Yes, we offer cosmetic reconstruction for broken toenails, called the Broken Toe Nail Repair.

How often should I schedule manicure and pedicure appointments for optimum benefits?

While individual needs may vary, generally, a manicure every two to three weeks and a pedicure once a month can help maintain healthy, beautiful nails and refreshed skin. Regular appointments ensure that you consistently enjoy the benefits of looking and feeling well put together.

What is Paraffin?

Paraffin is a wax treatment that moisturizes and softens the skin, often used in manicures and pedicures for added relaxation and skin hydration. You can add this service to your nail appointment as a suggested add-on when you book online.

Can regular manicures and pedicures contribute to overall well-being?

Yes. Beyond the aesthetic appeal, the massage elements in these treatments can relieve tension, improve blood flow, and relax the muscles in your hands and feet. The process can also be meditative, offering a break from daily stresses and providing a sense of rejuvenation.

Are there benefits to looking well put together through regular manicures and pedicures?

Definitely. Apart from personal satisfaction, presenting yourself with well-maintained nails can make a positive impression in professional and social settings. It often signifies attention to detail, cleanliness, and an appreciation for esthetics.

Why do I feel so good after getting a manicure or pedicure?

Well-groomed nails make you feel more polished and confident in your appearance. The relaxation and pampering associated with the treatments can also boost your mood, adding to the feeling of being well put together from the inside out.
