What is a Chemical Peel?

A chemical peel is a facial that has a lasting effect to improve the appearance and texture of the skin on the face (and sometimes neck or hands as requested). It involves the application of a chemical solution to the skin, which causes the outermost layers of the skin to peel off. This process stimulates the growth of new skin cells and collagen, resulting in smoother, more youthful-looking skin.

Our wide variety of chemical facial peels gives us options to customize a treatment that is just right for you.

Image Peels

Our Image facial peels chemically exfoliate the skin by breaking down dead skin cells. This ‘shedding’ of dead skin, in turn, speeds up the cell turnover rate bringing new skin to the surface at a faster rate.

Jessner Peel

Experience the power of the Jessner Peel, a medium-to-deep peel suitable for all skin types. This powerful peel is specifically formulated to address multiple skin concerns, including:

  • Hyperpigmentation
  • Sun damage
  • Scarring
  • Fine lines
  • The appearance of large pores
  • Skin firming
  • Improvement of skin texture

With its potent blend of active ingredients, the Jessner Peel delivers remarkable results, unveiling a more even-toned, rejuvenated complexion.  This professional-grade treatment will reveal your skin’s true radiance and restore a youthful glow.

Active Ingredients Explained:

  • Lactic Acid: Lactic acid is an alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) that gently exfoliates the skin’s surface, removing dead skin cells and promoting cell turnover. It helps to improve the skin’s texture, smoothness, and overall appearance. Lactic acid also has hydrating properties, making it suitable for dry or sensitive skin.
  • Salicylic Acid: Salicylic acid is a beta hydroxy acid (BHA) that penetrates deep into the pores, exfoliating and unclogging them. It effectively removes excess oil, dirt, and debris, making it beneficial for acne-prone or congested skin. By promoting cellular turnover, salicylic acid helps to improve skin tone and texture, reducing the appearance of blemishes and acne scars.
  • Resorcinol: Resorcinol is a powerful exfoliating agent that helps to break down rough and uneven skin. It aids in reducing hyperpigmentation, such as sunspots or melasma, by inhibiting the production of excess melanin. Resorcinol also has a mild antiseptic effect, making it beneficial for controlling acne and promoting a clearer complexion.

How to maximize my results:

To achieve optimal results, we recommend a series of 3-6 Jessner Peels spaced 4 weeks apart. By spacing the peels accordingly, your skin has the opportunity to undergo a progressive improvement process. The spaced intervals allow for proper healing and regeneration, ensuring long-lasting and noticeable transformations with each subsequent peel.

Frequently Asked Questions

How strong are Chemical Peels?

The strength of chemical peels can vary and is typically categorized as superficial, medium, or deep, determined by the potency of the chemical solution and its penetration into the skin.

Our experienced skin technicians carefully evaluate your skin type and peel history to ascertain the appropriate strength necessary to achieve your desired skin goals and adjust its strength accordingly.

If you’re new to our peel treatments, we usually start with an initial peel of gentler strength and adjust it , ensuring a tailored and comfortable experience aligned with your unique needs.

What are the benefits of Chemical Peels?

Here are the key benefits of peels:

  • Improved Texture and Tone: Chemical peels work to refine the top layer of the skin and enhance overall skin tone, providing a smoother and more uniform complexion.
  • Reduced Fine Lines: Chemical peels can diminish the appearance of fine lines. They are also a great choice to switch up your monthly facial and support your skin if you are dramatically addressing signs of aging with laser treatments.
  • Hyperpigmentation Reduction: Chemical peels help fade hyperpigmentation concerns like sun spots and age spots, leading to a more even skin tone.
  • Diminished Scarring: Whether from acne or other causes, chemical peels contribute to reducing the visibility of pigmented scars, including acne scars, and promoting a more uniform skin surface. They also contribute to enhancing the results of PicoSure treatments for pigmented scars or Fractional laser for reducing atrophic scars caused by chickenpox or cystic acne.
  • Collagen Stimulation: Chemical peels lightly stimulate collagen production, a vital protein that supports skin elasticity and firmness. This plumping effect can minimize the appearance of aging signs.
  • Pore Unclogging and Acne Reduction: Chemical peels effectively clear clogged pores, helping to reduce the occurrence of acne and enhancing the skin’s clarity.
  • Enhanced Overall Appearance: The cumulative impact of these benefits results in a revitalized complexion – brighter, smoother, and more youthful-looking skin.

Will I see dramatic results after a Chemical Peel?

The results of a chemical peel will depend on a number of factors, including the strength of the peel, the condition of your skin, and the specific concerns you are trying to address.

In general, a chemical peel can provide noticeable improvements in the appearance of the skin, but the degree of improvement may vary from person to person.

Some people may see dramatic results after a chemical peel, particularly if they have significant hyperpigmentation, acne scarring, or other skin concerns. Others may see more subtle improvements in the appearance of their skin. Your Total Wrapture skin technician will study your unique skin and give you personalized information on what to expect.

Depending on the strength of the peel and the condition of your skin, you may need multiple peels to achieve the desired results. It is important to maintain a good skincare routine and protect your skin from the sun in order to maximize the benefits of the peel and help to maintain your results over time. Ask your Total Wrapture skin technician to design a customized routine for your unique skin!

What should I expect during my Chemical Peel?

Here’s what to expect after your skin technician has conducted a thorough consultation to determine exactly what peel and what level of peel potency to use:

During the Chemical Peel:

1. Preparation: Lie back comfortably while your skin is cleansed and prepared for the treatment. This may involve removing any makeup, dirt, or oil from your skin.

2. Application: The chemical solution will be applied to your skin, either with a brush or cotton pad. The solution will be left on your skin for a specified amount of time, depending on the strength of the peel and the condition of your skin.

3. Sensation: You may feel a mild tingling  during the treatment. This is normal and should subside within a few minutes.

After the solution has been on your skin for the recommended time, it will be gently removed.

What should I expect after my Chemical Peel?

After the Chemical Peel:

1. Recovery: You will be given thorough aftercare instructions for your unique skin. If this is your first peel with us, you may experience mild redness and flaking for a few days as the top layer of your skin sheds. Typically, a first peel is relatively mild to measure your skin’s tolerance.

If you have previously had a peel with us and have now graduated to a more potent level, you may experience redness and flaking or peeling of the skin in the days following your chemical peel. This is normal and should subside within a week or two.

2. Sun protection: You should avoid exposure to the sun and use sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 to protect your skin during the healing process.

3. Results: You should see an improvement in the appearance of your skin within a few days to a week after the chemical peel. Your skin will look brighter, smoother, and more youthful. Multiple treatments may be required to achieve your desired results.

Are chemical peels suitable for all skin types?

Chemical peels can be tailored to various skin types and concerns. Our skilled technicians will assess your skin and customize the peel to ensure optimal results for smooth, dewy results.

How many sessions are recommended for best results?

The number of sessions varies depending on your skin goals and the peel’s depth. Superficial peels may require a series of treatments, while deeper peels may offer noticeable results with fewer sessions. Your technician will create a personalized treatment plan for your unique skin and goals.

Is there any downtime after a chemical peel?

Not really. Superficial peels usually involve minimal downtime, with slight redness that fades quickly. Medium and deep peels may involve a few days of mild peeling and redness; however, as long as you are using SPF, following your customized aftercare instructions, and avoiding sun exposure during that time, no other downtime is needed.

Your technician will provide post-care instructions based on the peel’s strength and your unique skin to ensure a smooth recovery.

Can chemical peels be combined with other treatments?

Yes, chemical peels can complement various treatments, such as microdermabrasion, laser therapy, or skincare products. For example, PicoSure and fractional lasers reach into a deeper layer of the skin, known as the dermis. They target specific layers of the dermis to address concerns such as pigmentation, pronounced scars, premature signs of aging, and skin texture.

However, chemical peels both support and boost advanced treatments while ensuring that your top layer is properly exfoliated to absorb your at-home, pharmaceutical-grade skincare routine that works hand-in-hand with your advanced treatments.

Your technician will guide you on the best combination to achieve your desired results.

Are chemical peels painful?

You might experience a mild tingling during the application, but most guests find the sensation comfortable. Our technicians prioritize your comfort throughout the process.

Can chemical peels address specific skin concerns like acne or pigmentation?

Absolutely! Chemical peels can effectively target concerns such acne, hyperpigmentation, fine lines, and uneven skin tone. The type and strength of the peel will be chosen based on your specific needs.

The Best Exfoliating Treatment for Acne:

Most exfoliating treatments such as dermaplaning and microdermabrasion are not recommended for skin experiencing widespread acne. Enter chemical peels! They are an excellent choice for deep exfoliation when you are experiencing acne.

How do I prepare for a chemical peel?

Here are some tips for getting the most out of your peel:

Avoid Sun Exposure & Hydrate: Minimize sun exposure and avoid tanning beds for a couple weeks before your chemical peel. Sunburned or tanned skin is more sensitive and prone to irritation. Maintain proper skin hydration by drinking plenty of water in the days leading up to your peel. Hydrated skin tends to recover more effectively.

Pause Exfoliant Use: Refrain from using exfoliating products, such as alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs), beta hydroxy acids (BHAs), retinoids (such as retinol), and scrubs, for about one week prior to your peel. These products can increase skin sensitivity and may interfere with the peel’s effectiveness.

Medication Review: Inform your technician about any medications you’re taking. Certain medications can affect your skin’s response to the peel. Avoid or adjust the use of the following:

  • Accutane: If you’re taking Accutane or similar medications, your technician will advise on the appropriate waiting period before undergoing a chemical peel.
  • Topical Medications: Notify your technician if you’re using any other topical medications or treatments, such as antibiotics or acne creams.

Avoid Waxing or Depilatory Creams: Refrain from waxing or using depilatory creams on the treatment area at least one week before the peel.

Can I work out immediately after my chemical peel?

Following a chemical peel, we generally recommend avoiding intense physical activities, including working out, immediately afterward. This is because a chemical peel may make your skin more sensitive, and engaging in vigorous exercise could potentially exacerbate this sensitivity and lead to discomfort.

Here’s what you should consider regarding working out after a chemical peel:

Immediate Post-Peel Period:

  • Directly after a chemical peel, your skin may feel slightly sensitive, tight, and there could be some redness.
  • Engaging in intense physical activities like working out could cause excess sweating, friction, and increased blood flow to the face, potentially irritating the treated skin.

Recommended Wait Time:

  • Waiting at least 24 to 48 hours (or as directed by your Total Wrapture skin technician) is advisable before resuming any strenuous exercise routine.

Precautions:

  • When you do resume exercising, consider lighter activities or workouts that don’t involve excessive sweating or rubbing of the treated area for a few days.
  • Always follow your skin technician’s post-care instructions, which may include specific guidelines regarding exercise and skincare.

Hydration and Sun Protection:

  • Stay hydrated and avoid prolonged sun exposure.
  • Applying sunscreen (SPF 30 or more) and protecting your skin from UV rays helps prevent further irritation or potential hyperpigmentation.

Can I shave my face immediately after a chemical peel?

Avoid shaving your face immediately after a chemical peel, especially if you’ve had a deeper peel or if your skin is still sensitive.

When you do resume shaving, opt for a gentle approach. Use a clean, sharp razor to minimize the risk of irritation and nicks. Apply gentle pressure and avoid pulling or tugging on the skin.

How often should I do a chemical peel?

Your skin technician will be able to answer you more specifically as peel frequency is heavily dependant on your unique skin. Generally, here are some guidelines for how often you might consider doing a chemical peel:

  1. Superficial Peels: These are milder peels that target the outermost layer of the skin (epidermis). They can typically be done more frequently, such as every 3-6 weeks. Superficial peels are often used for routine exfoliation and skin maintenance.
  2. Medium Peels: Medium-depth peels penetrate deeper into the skin and may require more time between sessions. They are often performed every 3 to 6 months, depending on the specific peel and your skin’s response.
  3. Deep Peels: Deep peels, which target deeper layers of the skin, are typically performed less frequently, often only once or spaced out in a year or as recommended by your skin technician.

How much does a chemical peel cost?

Depending on the type of peel you pick, the cost of a high-quality peel generally starts at $125. Scroll back up to see the listed price of each of our peels.
